Muscles and organs are attached, stabilized, enclosed, and separated by a band or sheet of connective tissue, mostly collagen, beneath the skin categories under fascia.
There are 3 different types of fascia. First type is superficial layer – the top layer of skin in most parts of the body that connects to the inner layer of the skin. Second type is deep layer – the connective tissue that wraps around each muscle and creates fascial spaces between groups of muscles. Third type is the visceral layer that holds the organs in place with layers of connective tissue, similar to ligaments, tendons and connective tissues that connect muscles to bones.
The degree of health is related to the deep fascia. The better the gliding of the deep fascia, the better the elasticity of the superficial fascia.
Problems emerge when fascia loses elasticity, becomes overly stiff, has limited shearing ability, or has been traumatized.
Fascia wellness is typically performed gently because the more pressure applied, the stronger the resistance. That explains the post soreness lasting around 1-2 days after a tuina or massage.
Fascia is a huge network of connective tissue found in practically almost every aspect of the body. In TCM, this is categorized under 十二筋经twelve muscle regions, also known as aponeurotic system. The fascial system connected to the twelve meridians is a network through which the Qi of the twelve meridians provides hydration and nourishment to the muscles and joints. It possesses the capabilities of immobilizing bones and facilitating the movement of joints through flexion and extension. Therefore, fascia wellness can address a wide range of concerns. The techniques may involve a combination of manual warming, stretching, sweeping, activation, basic movement, etc.
